Kirchner. Picasso | exhibition graphics and scenography
The exhibition »Kirchner. Picasso« at the LWL Museum of Art and Culture in Münster is the first comprehensive exploration of these two unique artists and their similarities and differences.
The graphic design for the exhibition is inspired by the Modernist era. The typeface »Neue Brücke« (New Bridge) is a reinterpretation of the woodcuts Kirchner himself created for the artists' group »Brücke« (Bridge). In addition to texts, quotes and a wordmark, a large part of the project was a large-scale wall design that showed the biographies of the two artists in parallel.
Since both artists were deeply inspired by the vaudeville culture of the 1920s and by dance, a modern interpretation of a vaudeville theater, complete with a dressing room and cinema, was incorporated into the exhibition.
A central space is the artists' studio: surrounded by large-format original images, visitors are invited to unleash their own creativity and experiment with various drawing styles. The scenography is based on the design of stage sets – for both artists, the studio was not only a place to work and experiment, but also a place for self-presentation. In the exhibition, visitors themselves become part of the scenography.
An exhibition by the LWL Museum of Art and Culture, Münster, and the Kirchner Museum Davos.
